Chapter 3: Different Kinds of Sex Toys for Women
Out of all the chapters in this guide, this one will probably be the most useful for you. If you know nothing about sex toys, knowing what is available is your key to success. Here you will see exactly the different kinds of sex toys available to you, what the features are, and what exactly they do.
As I’ve discussed, there are 1,000’s of different kinds sex toys that do almost everything imaginable. To simplify things – vibrators, dildos, cock rings, & anal toys.
Vibrators
Vibrators are vibrating sex toys intended to stimulate various regions of the body. They are designed for internal and/or external stimulation. Most often, vibrators will be grouped by the part of the body they are designed to stimulate: clitoris, g-spot, nipples, etc. Sometimes, they are grouped by the style of their construction.
I have divided them by Penetrative (Internal Stimulation) and External Stimulation.
External Stimulation Vibrators
External stimulation vibrators are used to stimulate the outer parts of the vagina.
Personal Massagers
Personal massagers are often wall powered, but have insane power behind them. They can be used for massage on any part of the body, but are quite delicious on naughty parts. Some newer models are now rechargeable and cordless.
The Hitachi Wand has been a popular personal massager for nearly 30 years. More women own the Hitachi Magic Wand than any other sex toy. If you’re curious about BDSM and other kink related information, check out the “Beginners Guide to Kink” section.
Incredible vibration, classic design, & reliable.
Clitoral Stimulation Vibrators
Compact, powerful, incredibly pleasing.
Like the name suggests, clitoral vibrators are used to stimulate the clitoris. If you don’t know where your clitoris is, check out the “Female Masturbation: How to Masturbate” blog post. Clitoral vibrators are great first vibrators for women who are not comfortable using “insertable vibrators” quite yet, or those who know the clitoris well.
Some clitoral vibrators come in a round, egg like shape, while others are shaped more like a bullet. You will often hear them referred to as “egg vibrators” or “bullet vibrators”. Another type of clitoral vibrator that is popular is the “finger vibrator” – often simply a good bullet vibrator with a ring for your finger, allowing for easier control.
Clitoral vibrators are often very small, so they are great for discretion. Not meant to be inserted into the vagina, the clitoral class of vibrators are designed specifically for external stimulation of the clitoris, labia, and vulva.
If you want spot on clitoral stimulation, then a clitoral vibrator is the way to go.
Penetrative Vibrators
Powerful, deep, satisfying orgasms.
Insertable, or penetrative, vibrators are the most classic “vibrator” you will come across. They are often long and narrow and come with a variety of texture options. If you’re looking for something to stick inside of your vagina, then an insertable vibrator is the way to go.
There are numerous types of insertable vibrators:
Realistic Vibrators: Realistic vibrators are just that. They are designed to look and feel like a real penis, but with a vibrating motor inside! Realistic vibrators have made huge strides in their realism from their introduction in the early 60’s. New realistic skin-like materials have been developed that can enhance the experience. These materials are used to create texture, firmness, and stiffness.
Traditional or Classic Vibrators:
G-Spot Vibrators: A G-Spot vibrator is specifically designed to stimulate the G-Spot. G-Spot vibrators come in a variety of materials and textures. Some are flexible so you can maneuver the vibrator to stimulate exactly where you want it. Others are made of firm materials and are ultra stiff. Begin with a stiff, but small g-spot vibrator.
Rabbit Vibrators: Of the described penetrative vibrators, the Rabbit Vibrators are the modern Queen of Sexual Stimulation. They not only are insertable, they also feature a vibrating attachment that stimulates the clitoris at the same time!
If you’re looking for something that has lots of vibrations, penetration, and clitoral stimulation all at once–you will love rabbit vibrators. They come in a variety of materials and textures. Some rabbits are made of silicone and molded with textures for extra stimulation. Others are firm and smooth for a sleek experience. Either way, a rabbit vibrator is a pleasure machine.
Insertable sex toys (dildos and vibrators included) generally come in dozens of “types” and you’ll see them organized differently at every shop you visit. These penetrative vibrators are sometimes called ‘traditional vibrators’, ‘classic vibrators’, or sometimes ‘penetrative vibrators’.
Dildos
I didn’t know the difference between a dildo and a ding dong!
I don’t want that to be you.
Great for learning learning some new moves!
Dildos don’t vibrate, and that is the biggest “difference between a vibrator and a dildo”. Most dildos are ergonomically designed to give extreme pleasure and are made of many materials and textures. Different types of dildos include: Glass Dildos, Stainless Steel Dildos, Wooden Dildos, and Realistic Dildos. The realistic dildos have really improved over the years. They are ergonomically designed to feel as if a real penis is in your vagina and they look impressively real.
When choosing a dildo, it is often like choosing a piece of art. Some dildos are made of cheap material and are not well crafted nor designed for great stimulation. There are others that are carefully thought out and designed to stimulate specifically. The hand crafted ones made of wood or glass or steal are always a good sign that you will find a great value dildo.
Dildos are great if you really want to explore your vagina and ways to stimulate internally. Often a dildo can lead to “female ejaculation” much easier than a vibrator can. You will be sure to find whatever size Dildo you need. Thick, thin, short, long, extra long, endless possibilities. Textures go the same way. Like I said, picking a dildo is like picking a piece of art. Take your time and find your Van Gogh.
Cock Rings
Cock rings are made to go around the shaft of the penis to help a man hold his erection as well as providing stimulation at the same time. They come in a variety of sizes and materials. Cock rings are great if you’re looking to give your man a little extra something during play and intercourse or if you want to give him a little extra something for his private time.
Some cock rings come with a vibrator attached – lots of fun for both of you!
The more specific the cock ring, the better the fit, which usually means better stimulation.
Anal Toys
Men have a prostate and women do not, but many women find anal stimulation extremely pleasurable. During anal exploration, we often encounter nerve endings that create sensations similar to vaginal stimulation or penetration, but with a slightly different flavor!
Butt Plugs (or Anal Plugs)
A Butt Plug is a sexual product designed to be inserted into the anus. Butt plugs generally are made to fill the anal cavity (or Rectum) – the sensation of being filled can be very pleasurable. All butt plugs feature a flanged base – this broad base keeps the butt plug from sliding too deeply into the rectum.
The shape of most butt plugs, that of a tear drop, gives the plug a propensity to slide to it’s deepest position. A broad round-ended cone leads to a narrow shaft, which leads to a broad base. With generous anal lubrication, the plug will slide right down to that base and stay in place.
If you are new to butt plugs, I suggest looking for something with a wide base, a smooth surface, or something you can loop your finger into and have full control of your experience.
Some anal plugs do come with a vibrator (or have one built in).
Butt plugs are made from the same materials as dildos, including silicone, steel, wood, plastics, and rubber.
So you think butt plugs are scary and dangerous…
- If it has a flange on the bottom, it’s not going to slide any deeper.
- Both men & women use butt plugs.
- Can be worn for an extended period of time.
- Both insertion, removal, and extended wear can be pleasurable.
Anal Beads
Anal beads are a sex toy made of multiple balls attached together in series. They are designed to be inserted through the anus into the rectum and then removed with varying speeds depending on the effect desired. For most people (women and men included) the sensations that can occur as your sphincter muscles open and close around a series of small round objects are very pleasant. When withdrawn at the peak of orgasm, you may experience an erotic thrill unlike any other. If you’re already discovered the joys of anal play, you owe it to yourself to give this toy a try.
Anal Probes
Features to look for when choosing my sex toy:
It’s a sexual revolution out there! There are so many choices. You’re lucky enough to be alive during the most incredible era in sex toy history – each year, new models are released boasting new orgasm-inducing features.
While there are some excellent classic models – especially dildos and ben wa balls – historically, sex toys have sucked. Most toys made before 1990 were of the tacky-LR6-battery-operated variety designed to last about a week.
You may think your that jelly, LR6 battery operated (read: hearing aids!) vibrator is durable and should last years, but I can tell you that it’s not. You’ve been shammed into buying crap that is probably a little unsafe, and definitely not meant to last.
So during this ‘sexual revolution’ what should a woman look for? A rechargeable, remote controlled, waterproof vibrator. This is the ultimate orgasm machine.
Rechargeable Vibrators
Some vibrators run on batteries, and that’s fine, but I think other women will find that batteries are a pain. Batteries found in older sex toys can be difficult to find and you often find yourself needing those batteries quite frequently.
Personally, I can’t stand any kind of vibrator that runs on batteries, so one thing I look for is that the vibrator be rechargeable. This can mean it has an internal rechargeable battery designed to last and that it comes with a charger that plugs directly into the vibrator.
Remote Control
Some vibrators come with a remote control. A remote control makes powering off & on easy and fast! Plus, for vibrators with advanced vibration patterns or settings, the remote gives you full control of those settings!
- Full control of all vibration patterns.
- Instant & easy off/on control.
- Explore new sensations, give your lover the control he demands.
- Keep your hands dry and clean.
- Reach controls with ease. An end to stretching & struggling for hard to reach buttons.
A remote control (wireless or wired) puts an end to the annoyance of changing settings directly on the vibrator. All controls can easily be controlled on the remote, keeping the vibrations exactly where they belong, and not up by your face as you try to read the controls and find the right button.
A wireless remote control introduces a new kind of sensory play. Hand the wireless remote control to your partner, let them tease and please you to an incredible orgasm.
Note: Be realistic. You can’t expect your lover to be able to control your vibrator from the couch, while you’re out grocery shopping, or driving on the highway. Most wireless remote control vibrators reach anywhere from 10-40 feet. You don’t go changing the TV channel from the driveway, don’t expect much more out of these remote controls either.
Waterproof
Unless you don’t get messy and never plan on taking a shower with your vibrator, then you definitely need a waterproof vibrator. It’s rare to find a vibrator that isn’t made of waterproof material these days, but make sure you are aware of whether or not the purchase you are making is waterproof. Waterproof vibrators are also way easier for clean up.
Appearance
Appearance is very important when it comes to me choosing my sex toys. Pardon my pun, but I don’t like the negative vibes that come along with vibrators. Vibrators often look cheap and trashy, and that’s not me. We have been saved by luxury sex toys, which I am a huge advocate for. In my opinion, I’d rather spend an extra 30 dollars and get a sexy looking toy that makes me feel sexy.
If you we’re shopping in the 70s we’d have issues finding a classy toy in a chic package, but not today. Numerous brands encase their products in thoughtful packaging that looks chic and hot. You can immediately tell time, money, and (most importantly!) thought went into these toys. You’ll learn the brands quickly and which ones you like and don’t like.
Materials
Pick a sex toy that feels good to you. I know, I know. How could you find that out through the Internet? I often think of materials as being in one of two groups: firm and squishy. Yes, very official terms.
Within the firm group, you have numerous stiff and firm materials. The most popular firm materials used to make sex toys today are:
- Borosilicate Glass or Pyrex Glass
- Stainless Steel
- Wood
- Stone
- TPR/TPE
- Ceramic
Within the squishy group of sex toys, there are even more materials. I’ll be excluding those I detest or have deemed unsafe, we’ll discuss those later. Today, I would suggest the following squishy materials for sex toys:
- Silicone
- Rubber
- Elastomer or Elastomed
- Realistic/LifeLike Materials
There are hundreds of materials being used, but many of them fit into these groups well. Often, these materials are a combination of these, in some fancy polymer that allows them to call it by a unique name, like “SuperSoftSkin” or “VixSkin”. Each of those link to a detailed discussion of them and include any possible alias you’ll want to be prepared for.
There is nothing better than a well crafted stainless steel or glass dildo that lasts forever and nothing worse than a cheap jelly insertable that dies after 2 weeks of play.
Sex Toy Materials Safety
As I mentioned above, there are several materials I dislike and/or think shouldn’t be used for making sex toys. My list of never-buy-materials is:
- Jelly (or Jelle, Jel-ly, etc.)
- PVC containing Phthalates
I hate PVC and Jelly because…
Jelly is great for beginners because it is flexible, but I think you will find yourself underwhelmed quickly and wanting to try new things. That is great! I have vibrators of every kind of material, shape and size you can think of. Each of them get me off, but the type of orgasm I hope to have is dependent on the sex toy I choose for my Chloe time. Look around and see what you like. Plastic, Silicone, Smooth, Rough, Beads, Twirls, Jelly, Wood, Steel, Glass, thick, thin, short and long.
Ok Chloe, I’ve read about every sex toy known to woman, how do I know what I like and how to choose?
First, that is NOT every sex toy known to woman. Second, keep reading to see how to start narrowing down choices to pick your perfect sex toy.
